Master Cleanse - Like Being on a Nude Beach (Day 11)

Thursday, June 14th, 2007 |

I was stationed in Coronado for a while when I was in the Navy…studied Surface Warfare before going off to serve in Japan.

One morning I went for a run along the beach in La Jolla. I kind of looked up ahead and saw what I thought were a couple of hundred people running around….without clothes on…naked, nude, that sort of thing.

It was 20 years or more ago and I was a Midwestern Bible-belter and naive to say the least. I had never heard of nor thought of there really being a nude beach. But…I had heard that California was different.

So,  I decided to run on up a bit closer to make sure it was a nude beach. It was.

People playing frisbee, naked. Playing vollebyall, naked. Running, naked. Having lunch, naked. Swimming in the sea, naked.

I could tell who the rookies were, they were

Master Cleanse - 5 Reflections on the Experience (Day 10)

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 |

Today is the last day.  I have not eaten anything solid for 10 days…except ice at the restaurant last week. At around noon today I will finish this master cleanse and start breaking the fast.

It’s at this point that I should have some great insights that I should share.

They are not great…but here are some of the things that I learned.

1. Don’t expect too much. In other words, do not expect to gain great insights into life, be throughly cleansed and lose 25 lbs. It doesn’t happen. I feel no differently, think no differently now than I did 10 days ago. I don’t have a greater appreciation for food, eating right/wrong, or for the poor and starving. I just want to get back to eating…perhaps a wee bit more healthily.

2. The numbers don’t add up. It’s a lie if someone tells you they don’t want to lose weight doing this. I wanted to. But, it didn’t happen. And that’s a puzzle. It’s not like I did NOT have weight to lose. I started out at 214 and I ended up at 206. Eight pounds in 10 days of consuming a 1000 calories/day while maintaining my regular life style, including exercising…I should have shed more…maybe.  Unless….I calculate 2500 calories/day short x 10 days = 25,000/3500 (cal/lb) = 7lbs lost.  Maybe the numbers add up after all.

Master Cleanse - Routines and WakeUps… (Day 9)

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 |

When my kids were little, they had no concept of time. They did, however, know what it means to go to bed and wakeup.

"When are we going to the beach, papa?"

"In 5 more wake-ups."

They measured time by how many times they had to wake up.

I have one more wake-up. Tomorrow is day 10. Whoopee, yea, hooray and all that. Sort of.

In the past nine days I have settled into a routine.

6-7am - Wake up to an active lower intestine. It depends on what time I drank the smooth move the night before. It usually takes about 8 hours to work its, um, magic.

Head for the throne room and have a think.

Check deposits. Even after nearly nine days of absolutely no solids, I still need some cleaning, albeit, very little.

Go to the kitchen and make some lukewarm water. I nuke a quart of cold filtered water for two minutes and it comes out just right…puky warm. Add two tablespoons, er, teaspoons of sea salt and head to my study.

Master Cleanse - My Mom Wasn’t Very Smart But… (Day 8)

Monday, June 11th, 2007 |

Day 8 is supposed to be the day of enlightenment. Enlightenment, ensmightenment.

It has something to do with day 7 being the hardest and the best of feelings always follow the worst. Uh…I am still waiting for the calm and serenity and breakfast.

I shouldn’t be this hungry to be sure….and I think it is my fault. I don’t drink enough of the lemonade and what I do drink doesn’t have enough maple syrup in it. So, I am not getting enough calories.

Master Cleanse - 4 Lies (Day 7)

Sunday, June 10th, 2007 |

I have been telling myself lies since I started this Master Cleanse. It makes me wonder who else I will lie to and what other character flaws I have.

1.  I tell myself I am NOT in this to lose weight. Lie! Not so deep down, I hope to lose 20 lbs in these 10 days and become and look fighting mean. Fat chance of that. It comes from being too fat to begin with, hah!   Cleaner, healthier, leaner…is what it is suppose to be about. And, to be sure,  I think about those things often, but the lie of it is, I want to lose weight…and no doubt have (but not 20lbs), and will put it back on if I don’t make life changes in the way I eat. I have three more days of this nonsense…perhaps I should take another look at how I got to this place, be HONEST with myself and make some changes.Mastercleanse

2. I tell myself I am following the directions exactly. Lie! That is what I do best.  I mean, I finish all the medicine in the bottle even after I feel better. Does anybody else do that? I spent 20 years in Japan where I learned about attention to detail…and 5 years in the Navy learning about how important the small things are. So…I measure the freshly squeezed lemon juice and cayenne pepper and maple syrup. Lie! By my calculations according to how much water I have drank this week, I should have finished 1.25 32oz bottles of the maple syrup by day 5. Uh…I finished the first 32oz bottle this morning preparing my drinks for day 7! I am way behind on the number of calories I should be taking in…liar that I am. What about the lemon juice and cayenne pepper?

Master Cleanse - 8 Discoveries (Day 6)

Saturday, June 9th, 2007 |

6 days without solid food…make that 6 days without anything except freshly squeezed lemons, maple syrup, senna leaf tea and cayenne pepper.

In the process thus far, I have discovered a few things.

1. There are other ways for toxins to leave the body than the usual waste disposal method. I have a zit the size of Mt. Fuji on my nose. In case you are wondering, Mt. Fuji is 3,776 meters tall and will fit on my nose, one of the bigger parts of my body. Friends know when I am coming because my nose usually shows up a few minutes before me. I suppose that this is ‘break out’ is an indication that a toxin or some other evil doesn’t want to take the long route and exit through the regular sewage pipes.Mastercleanse

2. My tongue is the color of a ski slope - stick it out, say ‘ah!’, and it hangs down. Yup, white as can be.  I reckon other things are escaping there as well. I am glad I don’t have to smell my breath.

Master Cleanse - Feeling Pretty Lonely (Day 5)

Friday, June 8th, 2007 |

If misery loves company then I wonder where my company is.

Yesterday was pretty miserable.

I’d like to know where I read or heard that it would get easier after three days…because it’s not true. I was hungrier yesterday than I have ever been…makes sense in that I haven’t eaten in 4 days. I guess I should be getting hungrier, no?

What I am also getting however, is lonelier.

I work at home…I have mentioned that in previous posts.

A couple of times a week  I get together with friends. On Tuesdays I get together with two buddies for breakfast and nothing else but to sit around and talk about our weeks, our work and to encourage one another. I skipped it this week because ham and cheese omelets, hashbrowns and toast or the Kal Special, hotcakes, eggs and choice of sausage or bacon does NOT fit in the Master’s, er, Master Cleanser’s plan. Maybe they don’t fit in the Master’s plan, either. But, that’s another subject.Mastercleanse_2

Yesterday, my wife’s high school friend came to visit the Bay Area (We live in the South Bay near San Jose, and yes, I know the way). Her friend lives in Montana and seeings as my wife and her friend are both ‘made in China’ they wanted to go to a good Chinese restaurant. Yup…we have a lot of good Chinese restaurants in the area. You can tell which ones are good, too…it’s where all the Chinese go to eat.

Master Cleanse - My Butt’s Dragging (Day 4)

Thursday, June 7th, 2007 |

I thought it was supposed to get easier after the third day. Or maybe that is what I wanted to think.

Nope. My butt is dragging. I woke up all wobbly, weak kneed, and dizzy.

Every day, I break myself away from the grind on my PC, churning out 15+ blog posts and grading assignments, giving feedback and answering questions for some 150+ students and bike to a gym to play gerbil on a treadmill and read in a 170F room till I can’t stand it anymore, then bike back home. Some people call it exercise…I chant "Grind, grind, grind" to myself with each down stroke on my bike pedals as head to Fitness 24.

Yesterday, I could hardly pedal my bike. I looked left and my head just kept on going around. Same with looking right. My arms felt like rubber bands and my legs like I was pushing on jello and the jello was winning.Mastercleanse_3

I did get to the gym and I did force myself to cover the two miles I usually run and I did finish a chapter of This Present Darkness while sitting in the sauna. And, I made it back home…abt 3-4 miles one way.

Master Cleanse - The Nasty and the Neat (Day 3)

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007 |

It’s kind of like Santa Claus and checking out the Naughty and Nice. Only for me, yesterday I saw the Nasty and Neat.

I say nasty because the subject matter is indeed of that nature. So, if you don’t want to venture into the realm of TMI (too much information) stop reading.

Senna Leaf (Smooth Move) + salt Water Wash = a scrub brush to the pipes.

I took the smooth move the first night too early. It woke me up at around 3am and I found myself hoping I was sitting on the pot and not just dreaming. (I was).Mastercleanse_4

The following morning, I drank a quart of warm water with the two teaspoons of sea salt in it and waited an hour. Nothing happened.

Master Cleanse - More Questions Than Answers - Day 2

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007 |

It’s my fault. As I mentioned in the day one post,  I didn’t think this thing through before I started.

Now, I have more questions than I have answers.

1. Will I be able to maintain the level of energy I need to get all my work done each day? As best as I can tell,  I got a whopping  600 calories yesterday, maybe less - I kinda guessed at how much maple syrup to put in the juice.

I do not have a physically demanding job…I maintain three blogs PanAsianBiz, RisingSunOfNihon and TheBizOfKnowledge for an online media business network. I also facilitate a very full load of classes for the University of Phoenix online = I sit all day. How many calories can a person burn doing that? I also bike round trip (6-7 miles) to a gym, run a couple of miles and sweat more toxins out in a super hot sauna.  And yesterday - I did that while taking in only 600 calories….how many more days will be that possible?Mastercleanse_5

2. How does anybody stomach a quart of anything much less a quart of sea water or lukewarm water with sea salt in it?
