Indian youth punished for having affair with widow

A youth who was a resident of Bodia Kamalpur village of Rewari district was expelled by the village panchayat for two years. The panchayat disapproved of Navin Kumar having an affair with a 37 year old widow.

Kumar’s face was blackened and was paraded on a donkey in the village. Even the police visited the place but no formal action was taken as no body gave a formal complaint to the authorities.

The widow, Nirmala Devi belonged to the Yadav community and Naveen belonged to the scheduled cast community. The two were having an affair for quite some time and eloped from the village recently.

The family of Nirmala Devi filed a police complaint about her disappearance after which a hunt was launched for her. The two were then found in the near by village and were brought back. The panchayat then ordered Navin not to enter the village for two years and was also fined Rs 5,100. Moreover, the woman was also given two months’ exile from the village and was also ordered to dig 10 square yard area in the village pond. On the other hand the sarpanch of the village Kanwar Singh denied having any information about the incident and al the information was given by the Sardar Police station officials.
